The QR code promotion will run approximately from July-August 2012, with registration beginning in May. Essentially, the 2012 promotion will generate awareness regarding mobile technology and how it could be integrated with direct mail. While still pending final approval, business mailers will be provided with a 2 percent postage discount on Standard Mail and First class mail that include a 2D barcode that can be read by a mobile device.
By integrating QR codes, a relatively new technology, with mail, something that has been around for a long time, the USPS hopes to stay relevant in the marketplace and attract customers with the discount. The only stipulation is that the 2D barcode must lead the user to a webpage for purchasing a product or service on a mobile device, or a personalized url.
