RFID Implants: A Handy Thing to Have

While RFID technology continues to expand across different markets, it’s not everyday that you hear about an individual getting an RFID implant just for convenience. That’s exactly what Joe Wooler, a 28 year old IT professional from Australia, did.

On Wednesday, June 16th Wooler underwent minor surgery to get the RFID impant in his hand. But why, you may ask? Two months prior to the surgery, Wooler stated, “Ok, So i have been looking into RFID a fair bit lately and I have decided to implant a Hitag S rfid chip into my hand. My goal is to get rid of all my keys (house, car and bike) and just use rfid. I don’t want to carry anything around with me so the best solution is to implant it!” on his blog. As of now, Wooler has the RFID chip working with the front door of his house, but also plans on having it work with his motorcycle, car, and eventually for the communications equipment cabinets at his workplace! While he realizes the RFID chip won’t be able to do everything, simply eliminating keys from Woolers life would make him pleased.

Canada Post to Deploy More Than 8,000 Intermec CN50s

The Canada Post, the official postal service of Canada, delivered over 11 billion letters to 15 million residential and business addresses. Due to this high volume, the Canada Post has decided to equip their team of over 8,000 foot-based Carriers with the Intermec CN50. The CN50 will allow workers to meet their daily delivery operations requirements, providing a timely delivery of information to customers for all traceable items.

In an effort to move away from paper-based delivery processes, the Intermec CN50 will ensure real-time upload of scanned data. Through its EA21 scanner and powerful 3G radio technologies, the CN50 will communicate with the Canada Post Central Delivery Information Application to provide streamlined data capture and delivery processes. Peter Duncan, Director Engineering Product Tracking Processes and Systems of Canada Post stated, “The Intermec CN50 provides stronger data capture and communication capabilities than our existing handheld solutions, and will help increase our savings and improve the end customer experience.”

The Barcode Turns 36 Tomorrow!

Friday, June 26, 1974 was a day that would forever change the way POS was done. While the barcode had been in developmental stages for years before, it was not until this fated day that a supermarket in Troy, Ohio sold a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy fruit gum using an official UPC code and barcode scanner.

Prior to the barcode, there was no universal system for assigning products, and each company had their own system, leading to an error rate of about 1/300 characters, as opposed to 1/36,000,000,000,000 with barcode scanners. Today, UPC barcodes are scanned more than 10 billion times a day, across 25 different industries. The advent of the barcode produced significant economic and productivity benefits for both shoppers, retailers, and manufacturers alike.

In honor of the barcode’s 36th birthday, you may want to check out my previous post on the history of barcodes.

Celebrate the barcode on June 26, and everyday, by following the latest barcoding news.

Secure 2D Barcode Scanning on the iPhone

A platform called codeREADr was recently released for iPhones to be used as barcode scanners for secure, real-time tracking and validation of 2D barcode data. Developers will now be able to integrate scanning and data collection into their business without the high expenses normally associated with commercial scanners and systems.

In addition to simply scanning barcodes, codeREADr also includes a web service for managing app users, devices and databases. With the web service, account holders can record, track and trace scanned data and even validate it against their service-specific database. Data that’s passed to and from the servers is encrypted and transmitted wirelessly in real-time via Wi-Fi and 3G networks, all within 1-2 seconds.

codeREADr can also be used for access control at events and security checkpoints, time, attendance, workflow management, asset tracking, contests and loyalty reward programs. codeREADr is a unique barcode scanning platform because of its real-time transaction and security.
