Barcode Prefixes and Product Country of Origin

Barcode Country of OriginRecently, I’ve received a lot of e-mails and comments regarding how to decipher a products country of origin via the barcode. While the first three digits do not signify what country the product was manufactured in, they do indicate the country in which the company is based. This means, the company is headquartered, or has an office in that location, but the product could have been made in another country. Since a company has to apply for a GS1 prefix, they simply state where they are located to receive their prefix, and can choose to manufacture their product anywhere in the world.

Here is a list of prefixes:

  • Wow! As a consumer, I have a right to know where the product that I am purchasing originated – not the address of the coporate offices. If in doubt, I just don’t buy the product.

  • Marcellus Katowicz

Great post very informative thank you !

  • Quite a revelation – the barcodes – just discovered them.
But I notice that there is a lack of clarity in some codes. For example – 49 = Japan; listed as restricted distribution as is code 232 which = Peru, Spain, Kenya, Co. Tyrone (Ireland), and UK.
Restricted distribution seems to be a cover up.

  • I’ve shared your post, it’s very useful and now I know how to check bar codes. Thanks!

  • It’s great to be able to check, however I just checked a packet of Coles Brand Brandy Snaps which states Made in India, however the barcode on the box is 9300601392193?
Can someone explain how this works!

  • Hi John,

    Here’s a full list:

    Looks like 930 is Australia.

  • Here we can come to know the country of origin but is there any way to decode the whole bar code. I mean I want to know what the other digits stand for?

  • I just wish to be able to decipher a barcode, as a consumer I feel entitled to this knowledge. Can someone enlighten me please?

  • Hi John,

If you read the details of the article you will see the barcode corresponds to the company that brands the package. For Coles branded products it will use a barcode prefix registered by coles, and they’ve chosen to register with their offices in Australia. It has nothing to do with where the product came from before packaging.

  • I checked a few of my pantry items and agree with John as the barcodes in Aus seem to only show where it is packaged. I have Select brand cherries from Chile, and the barcode shows Australia? Seems like we all need to do more checking!

  • The barcode is where it was packaged from or where the local supplier is from.
You can find 500-509 codes in the speciality foods aisle in coles as they are direct imports

  • MO defined (usually for internal use) – what does this mean, please?

  • what does
040 – 049 Restricted distribution (MO defined, usually for internal use)

  • Hi 776 doesnt seem to be in the list

  • I bought an item from an Asian store and it says made in Korea though when I checked the barcode the prefix 776 does not seem to be in the list of identified countries. Can anyone help does this mean its a hoax bar code. Thank you

  • Am I still living in AMERICA? Why are we as Americans accepting this bar code crap. We have the right to know where our food is (grown or produced) comes from with out having to decipher bar codes. I am wondering if we could start a petition protesting this insanity and why this was allowed to pass in the first place.

  • Marie

776 is either reserved for future use or is used by a non GS1 member. Why would there be a non GS1 member? I have no idea.

  • Which country of origin is this from?

  • Great lists of information. Thank you! Barcode is very helpful even to the costumers.

  • W/c country has the barcode starts from 662??

  • Passing on to others. Since can’t always be certain where product, esp food, comes come from always pray before eat.
